This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach Visual Art to Kindergarten through 8th-grade students with autism in a low-income, high-poverty district. My students are amazing, sweet, different, and unique among many other characteristics. When they enter my art room, they can't wait to explore and learn something new as well as be creative and challenged.

My students with autism will be able to print pictures they take from digital cameras to include them in their artwork.

Recently my students have been taking photographs with digital cameras that I have in the classroom. The excitement and the look of curiosity on their faces are priceless! It's so interesting for them to explore holding the cameras, inquiring about the parts, and how it works, as well as looking around the classroom to see what to take pictures of. On their own, they even discovered how to take "selfies!"

I printed many of these pictures from my school printer on printer paper, but it's not the same as an actual photograph. With this printer and extra paper and ink, my students will be able to explore the next step of their photography. They will be able to take the flash card out of the camera, insert it into the printer, and print their own pictures! Imagine the look on their faces when they see it printed out! Not only will they be able to print the pictures, but they can use them in their artwork. Creating collages, adding their photos to their drawings, and who knows what other creations they will come up with including their photographs. This will definitely be an amazing new experience for my students.
