Photographing Preschool Special Education

My students need a new digital camera, photo paper, ink, photo albums, and laminating sheets to document learning by making prints and photo books.

My Students

Class photo albums are the most popular books in our class library. My students love to look at photos of themselves and their friends. When they look at photos, they use language to describe and label the events and people in the photographs, language that they may not use in other contexts.

My students are preschoolers with special needs.

The children have a variety of disabilities, including Down syndrome, Autism, developmental delay, and language disorders. I also have a few students who are typically developing who serve as peer models for language and socialization. My students come from culturally diverse families and many have sociol-economic challenges, as well. My school is a Title I school and we have a large population of children with special needs and English Language Learners.

My Project

I try to take pictures of my students as they work and play each day. Right now, I am using an old camera I borrowed from my father and using my own money to order photo prints. A new camera will be able to take better photos of my active, young students. The protection plan will keep the camera safe, in case one of my young friends tries to take some photos of her own! With the additional supplies, I will be able to print photos from a photo printer that was donated to me, so there will be a quick turnaround from when photos are taken until the children will have access to the photos. I expect to fill the new photo albums with images of all our learning and fun over the coming months! The laminating sheets will be used to produce more class books to add to our library.

Many of my students struggle to communicate with their peers, families, and teachers.

I have found that looking at photos of themselves is a fantastic way to elicit language from my young students. I also try to send many photos home with students so they can create home-school connections. Because my students struggle to talk, these photos provide their parents with a clearer image of what their child does at school each day.
