Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Teacher look what I did!" My kids love to show off their work and I enjoy getting to see it, but not in the middle of my reading group instruction. Cameras provide a way for them to take that accountability for their work and share it with me and others at a time that works for all of us.
My students are first graders in a low income neighborhood.
They attend our Title one, public school, with many receiving free and reduced lunches. Our school has a high percent of English Language Learners. This is also a school with a high mobility rate, as students move in and out throughout the year, many within our school district. Having this technology would also allow me to share with their new teacher in our district.
They are eager to learn, but need the materials and attention to enhance their experiences. Many do not have access to supplies or technology at home, so it is very powerful and exciting for them to get to use things like cameras. They can take pride in their work. These students need experiences with using technology because they do not have these experiences at home and it is becoming more important to know how to use technology for success in today's society.
My Project
Digital cameras allow the students to show their work before they put the materials away. It is a great tool for me as the teacher as I can quickly check to see if they showed understanding of the task at hand or if it is something we need to revisit without paper/pencil work. It is also a way that I can keep records to show parents and administrators how students are using shared materials and things they are learning. Digital cameras will also help to minimize interruptions during reading groups, because the students will be able to take a picture to show their work and move on to their next activity. The students will be learning skills about how to use technology and about shared responsibility as they take care of our equipment. This independence with accountability allows the students to take pride in the classroom and gives me some peace to know that I have documentation and assessment photos, that will help to show my students' understandings of the tasks they are assigned.
By supporting this project, you can help our class to run smoother and offer technology that will be used daily to aid students to independently work at stations.
This keeps them accountable to the task they are assigned. You will be providing an important tool that can aid in assessing what they know, show misconceptions, document growth, and share with parents and staff how the students are using materials to learn the necessary skills needed to be successful, all while saving paper.
