My Students
My students are eager to be the leaders of the school. This includes many perks to being the oldest in the building. One of these privileges is helping with the yearbook. I would like students to be able to carefully handle equipment and capture moments that they feel are important from this year.
My students are 5th graders at an elementary school in the capital city of West Virginia.
They are very excited to be the 'big dogs' in the building during their last year of elementary school. Most of the students in our class come from homes living at or below the poverty level. Our school has a diverse population with varying levels of income, ethnicity, and race.
My Project
One of the things that 5th graders enjoy best in school is using technology. I am trying to incorporate more and more, however, limited material sometimes keeps me from accomplishing our goals. Two main projects that I would love for the students to complete the yearbook and filming themselves. I really enjoy including student photos in the yearbook because it shows me what moments of the year are special to them. They love it because it makes them feel like they were part of something special that they can keep. I also would like to allow students to film themselves while reading, performing plays, showing off projects, etc. By doing this, they can become better readers and presenters.
We only have one working camera for students to use.
With over 40 fifth graders, it is just not enough. I sometimes allow students to use my personal camera, but with that comes the risk of damage. I try to choose students that need the extra incentive for coming to school. Some students don't have that internal motivation or the academic drive and allowing them to be involved with something teaches them responsibility. By having three digital cameras with camera cases and memory cards to go around, we're reaching more students.
