My Students

I teach first grade in a low income school district. The students vary in backgrounds and I do have some students with special needs in my class this year. They are very eager to learn and enjoy lessons/activities that are engaging and hands on.

My students enjoy cooperative learning and working together during the school day.

There is such a wide range of abilities in this class, so it is important to provide materials that all levels can enjoy and learn from. It is amazing to see both social as well as academic growth during the first grade year!

My Project

Phonics mastery is proven to be a weakness in struggling readers.

Implementing a strong phonics background is an essential step in building fluency which leads to better reading comprehension.

Adding the listen and learn phonics set to my listening center, coupled with the interactive notebooks will help some of the more "at-risk" students in my classroom master important skills.

The listening portion provides valuable lessons which can be differentiated based on individual students' needs. The interactive notebook portion will then provide the students with important practice reinforcing the skills learned. This will help all of my students become great readers!
