Hello, I am a primary (K- 3rd) special needs teacher on the Westside of Chicago. This will be my first year teaching special education, and from what I've seen at other schools the special needs classes usually get what is leftover after the regular ed students and teachers have gotten their materials. Special education students must have lessons and activities that are tailored to their specific needs, and in order to do this there are materials I need to get my students to the next level. I work in an area where the students may come to school with little or no basic skills. I am writing this proposal for a reading rods alphabet & phonemic awareness kit, reading games, and a set of phonics readers. With the reading rods kit, the students will be able to work on letter recognition, and letter sounds, while also making and reading words. The phonics readers will help reinforce these skills while teaching the students how to read. I would also allow my students to check out the phonics readers that focus on the skills they are learning at the time. The reading games will be used as center activities to help reinforce the comprehension and phonics skills we are focusing on in reading. These materials are hands on and have the ability for the students to have fun while learning. These materials will give my students the opportunity to work at his or her own pace and at a level that is comfortable for him or her. These materials would definitely enhance the skills of the reading materials I have, and give my students the opportunity to become independent readers and life-long learners. My class and I will appreciate a donation of any of these materials. Thank you for your consideration.
