My students LOVE to come to my classroom to learn English! The group of dedicated teachers and aides at our school believe in providing all students with the skills they need to achieve their dreams, even though this is a high-poverty urban school with 95% of students eligible for free lunch.
Despite the challenges of living in a lower-socioeconomic urban environment, they are eager learners because they know they need language skills to communicate effectively in everyday life and in an academic setting.
The challenges of living in a lower-socioeconomic urban environment don't stop these wonderful students from striving to learn English, as well as doing a lot of catch-up with basic literacy and writing skills.
Some of my students are special needs students in addition to being English Language Learners. My fellow colleagues and I try our best to provide a safe and comfortable environment for our students because we know about their often difficult home situations.
My students in the lower elementary grades will benefit most from phonics games that will supplement the regular phonics curriculum. However, we do get students who have had interrupted or an almost complete lack of formal education - these students will also benefit from these phonics games to build the skills necessary for learning to read. The globe is an essential part of my classroom; I use it to show students where they are from, where characters in books are from, and for basic geography lessons.
We have an excellent phonics curriculum at our school, but students need reinforcement and repetition for what they learn; these phonics games will help them immensely.
When children have fun while learning, they are more likely to retain what is being learned. Games are an extremely important part of the learning process.
I have just closed up my classroom for the summer, and our old hand-me-down and broken globe had to be thrown out. It was past its prime, and the time had come to replace it. This new globe will be a welcome replacement for the old globe in September!
