This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Can we do it again?" my students often ask after we play a phonics game as a whole class. The students in my kindergarten class at our high-poverty urban charter school love to learn through games and hands-on activities, and I love to reinforce skills or teach new concepts this way.
However, the supplies for teaching and learning in these ways are hard to come by. Since we are a brand new school, opened just last year and adding two classrooms each school year, our budget goes to basic needs such as furniture, paper, and books. If I want to teach my students through a game, hands-on activity, or learning centers I must make all the materials by hand or purchase them out of my own pocket. Needless to say, this limits the number of games and centers we have in the classroom.
As an early childhood educator, I know that my young students learn best when the learning experiences are child-centered, hands-on, and engaging. It is my goal to find any way I can to provide them with more materials that help them learn in these ways. Puzzles, phonics games, and hands-on alphabet materials will help me reach this goal. These resources will also create enthusiasm and excitement in my students as they learn the basic alphabet and phonics skills they need to begin reading.
Our current focus during reading lessons is to find our "superpowers" as readers - the phonics and pre-reading skills that will help them make sense of print - so that they can become "super-readers". You can help my students build up their reading superpowers. With your support, my students will learn and practice phonics skills through more than drill, memorization and workbooks; they will have the hands-on, engaging materials to become true super-readers!
