Help me give my students more practice with word families to make them fluent readers! The flip books, rolling dice, and power pen quiz cards will give my students additional practice with difficult phonics letter combinations.

My Students
Each day, first graders depend on me to teach them how to read, write, and obtain problem-solving skills that will be the foundation of their education. These students come from a variety of diverse backgrounds. Their families qualify for free lunch and often do not have the means to provide literature, manipulatives, and other educational tools at home. I feel it is my role to provide them with rich learning experiences on a day to day basis.
Due to their backgrounds and limitations in resources at home, my students often enter elementary school significantly behind their more affluent peers.
My Project
Currently, I have a group of about 10 students (about a third of my class) who are reading below grade level. These students struggle to identify chunks or letters that combine to make one sound (like -ing, -tch, str-).
These students need more practice with these word families to begin identifying them and reading them faster to become fluent readers.
The word family flip books and rolling dice will be an engaging way for students to have more at-bats with word family chunks. The quiz cards and pens will give students immediate feedback on their work and progress toward mastering word family chunks to become better readers. Lastly, the phones will help students hear the sounds of each word so they can better blend the word together and become faster, smoother readers.
