My Students

The first-grade students at our Community Academy are curious, caring and ready-to-learn. We have been making gains, but still need help in some of our basic skills that were hard to master in virtual kindergarten. Although we are a neighborhood school within the Chicago Public Schools, many of the students also travel to attend our school. Our school is located on the south side of Chicago in the racially and economically diverse Hyde Park community. It serves approximately two hundred and fifty students from pre-kindergarten through the eighth grade. The school is an Options for Knowledge school with thirty percent of its students bused. The student population is ninety-nine percent African-American. Eighty percent of our students are low-income with eighty-six percent receiving free or reduced price lunch. The school has an attendance rate of ninety-five percent. Our school has a mobility rate of twelve percent, an expulsion rate of zero, and a dropout rate of zero.

My Project

These interactive phonics activities can be used in small groups with me. Then as they become more confident, they can work on their own, with partners, or in centers to build and read words. Having more fun and basic phonics activities will help students who are struggling with blending sounds and sounding out words to spell.

When learning is play, students win!

Students love to manipulate letters and enjoy success when building puzzles and solving problems. These new tools provide opportunities to engage with inviting, colorful, yet meaningful objects that will motivate their learning.
