Help me give my students phonics practice that will help them succeed as readers!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students attend a small school nestled in a neighborhood in Pennsylvania. The students attending my school are from an area marked by high poverty. These students are between first and third grade. The students in my room are students that are just below grade level in reading and math. The time for achievement gaps to close is running low. It is imperative that they see school as a positive space that respects and supports them.
It is increasingly important that these students know each and every day that poverty does not define them.
They deserve the best classroom experience. They need access to resources that support their education. These are the students that need a small push to feel and meet success.
This project will allow me to purchase engaging and purposeful materials to help build basic reading skills with our students. Not only will the students in my intervention room benefit from these materials but general education teachers will be able to borrow them to use in their small groups.
Students need the chance to interact with fundamental knowledge.
By providing them with hands on opportunities to build basic phonics skills, we are giving them the chance to unlock our language. We often take for granted the immense task reading in English is for students. There are so many rules, letter combinations and exceptions. These can become incredibly overwhelming but are so important.
Vowel tubs give students the chance to build vocabulary, write stories and words, and hear the vowel sounds in an exciting way. The stamps will allow students to practice basic phonics skills independently. The cards and flip books will give additional practice that can be independent, done with a partner, or used as a lesson with the teacher for extra support. All of these supplies will be enjoyable ways to build a strong foundation for reading success!
