Phonics for the Win!

Help me give my students tactile hands-on reading experiences such as magnetic letters and blends, games with which to practice phonics, and decodable readers, all while they have the chance to move.

My Students

My students are a fantastic group of 8 year olds. They are kind, supportive of each other, energetic, curious about the world around them, hard-working, and excited to learn! It is my privilege to be their teacher.

This group of children was in first grade when Covid-19 hit in 2020, so they spent the crucial last four months of first grade doing distance learning.

Some also spent all of last year at home, which contributes to some of their social and educational challenges, including focusing. Despite these difficulties, they cheer each other on and are making progress toward reading on grade level.

My Project

Because of my students' Covid-19 education experience, they have many holes in their phonemic awareness and phonics skills, which affects their reading fluency and comprehension. They also have a need to move, which often distracts them from learning. This year I have enjoyed the LETRS training, which focuses on the systematic teaching of phonics to students who are behind grade level in their reading skills. The Orton-Gillingham method has been referenced several times during the training.

These books and phonics manipulatives would provide us the materials to start using this method of hands-on systematic phonics in small groups with my students who are struggling.

The books included are recommended for lesson planning as well as resources such as sound and letter manipulation and decodable texts. Hands-on materials such as sound box mats, letter tiles, and magnetic letters would allow a group of 6 students at a time to manipulate sounds and letters to make words, and the games would help to make learning phonics fun. Finally, the bouncy bands and seat cushions would help them focus on phonics without having to hold still.

My third graders want to be able to read fluently. I'd love to help them get to grade level before the end of the year and this pack of phonics reading materials and flexible seating will help us achieve that goal.
