This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach 2nd grade in the Bronx. My students are enthusiastic learners who are excited to be in school.
The children in my class are creative, thoughtful, and so inquisitive!
They are excited to be back in school in person after learning at home for 18 months.
My Project
After a year and a half of learning from home, most of my students are reading two years below grade level. They are struggling with phonemic awareness, which is preventing them from becoming fluent and capable readers.
By giving them access to hands on materials that will help them learn to break apart words and blend them back together, my students will stay engaged throughout the learning process.
These materials will be used during small group and center time, allowing my students to practice skills independently that they can then take back and try in their reading books.
