My Students

At our school in Frankford, Philadelphia, I teach a group of joyful, determined, and insightful third graders who often struggle to achieve their goals in academics. Within my literacy classes, 85 students know my primary goal is to make them feel like they become better readers after every class with me. I ask them not to worry about their test scores, but to reflect on what makes reading easier for them on a daily basis. That is our number one focus: reading. We think about what we read. We analyze what we read. We share what we read with others.

The information we gather from reading changes the way we make decisions, the way we voice our opinions, and even how we define our own personalities every day.

My scholars are interested in reading chapter books that are often above their reading ability and are even motivated by the novels they see their older siblings and role models enjoying in the higher grades. Third grade is a pivotal year for them because we know that students who are behind in literacy by third grade have a higher chance of staying behind the curve for the rest of their academic careers.

My Project

The materials in this project will freshen our collection of indoor recess options. Our Play-Doh collection needs restocking and is a well loved favorite, but I am also expanding our drawing activities with Sharpies and fine tipped pens for our aspiring artists. Also included are some new building toy centers to get my students thinking outside the box and working with their hands and away from screens. Dry erase markers and erasers are a classroom staple, but also a popular way for students to play “teacher” on the big board during free time. Finally, we are in desperate need of a new heavy duty pencil sharpener that will stand the test of time and get the job done for roughly 50 pencils a day!
