My Students

I am an art enthusiast and incorporate art instruction into my curriculum, even with limited resources. In 5th grade, I have seen how art instruction has helped my students grow intellectually, emotionally, and socially. I believe every child is an artist and this can be fostered in the classroom.

I believe my students will not let their present situations dictate their future.

Outside of school, my students face gang violence and crime in this high poverty neighborhood; a neighborhood I grew up in and have now returned to because I feel I can serve as a positive role model for my students. Day in and day out, I continually push my students to their potential. When they feel like giving up, I'm there with encouraging words and emphasizing that hard work pays off and nothing worthwhile is easy. Art is a weekly activity and a wonderful way for us to spend our Friday afternoons. During what I like to call "studio time" for my artistes, I hear students complementing one another and providing positive feedback to their peers.

My Project

During the school year, we focus on Abstract Art and Pop Art. Within Abstract Art, we learn about the various movements and influential artists. Some examples include the Cubism movement, started by Picasso, and Abstract Expressionism, influenced by Kandinsky's work. When studying Pop Art, we focus on influential artists such as Keith Haring and his influence on New York street culture. Another artist we study is Andy Warhol, who used bright colors and replicated images in his artwork. The art supplies I am requesting will expose students to different mediums such as pastels and painting. Our school year culminates with a visit to an art museum, where they can view the work of the artists we learned about in class. My students need paints, palettes, drawing pads, and construction paper to help them get in touch with their inner "artiste" and opening their minds up to being a creative individual willing to explore new things. They will use these materials during our "studio time" on Friday afternoons to create their own art.

Studies show that children who are exposed to an arts education will see an improvement in reading, writing, and math.

Yet, funding has been cut or is non-existent, as is the case in my school. A child's self-esteem and confidence can increase when they're allowed to have fun in a creative environment.
