My Students

Currently, I work as a speech-language pathologist and assistive technology coordinator for a special education co-op that services over ten different schools in a rural county north of Waco, Texas. Our students come from diverse backgrounds, and most of our schools are Title I.

Many of my students have complex communication needs.

My students have disabilities such as autism, apraxia, down syndrome, intellectual disabilities, and cerebral palsy. These disabilities affect their ability to communicate effectively and they all benefit from the use of some form of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). They use high tech AAC (like iPads with communication apps) and low tech AAC (like picture-card exchange and manual core boards) to communicate their wants, needs, feelings, and thoughts.

My Project

My goal is to supply our nonverbal and limited verbal students with the tools they need to communicate with their teachers and peers.

The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) allows my students to use picture cards to request what they want, instead of or in addition to verbal speech.

These notebooks keep those picture cards in one place so my students can have easy access to their "words" at all times. They will be filled with words that are specific to each particular student's interests, so they will be motivated to request the things they actually enjoy. Please consider helping my students find their voice by funding new PECS books for their special education classrooms!
