My Students

Pet turtle? Check. Rat? Check. Crayfish? check. Snake? Check. Elephant? Challenging.

I work with all 300 students in an urban, public elementary school.

My job? Science teacher, although at times I feel more like a zoo-keeper. No, not because I spend my days herding children, but because of the live animals in my classroom. In elementary school, we learn all about animals in our Life Sciences unit. From learning the basic parts on animals in kindergarten to understanding the interdependence of animals in an ecosystem in fourth grade, animals are a big part of our curriculum. In our district, we use a hands-on Science curriculum called FOSS. It even includes live organisms, so many of the animals in my classroom were actually provided by the district. However, some animals just aren't possible to keep in the classroom. In order to learn about them, we're going to need more.

My Project

I'm requesting a variety of tools to help students learn about animals. These are tools for kids to see and touch, to allow them to get up close with animal models or actual animal specimens. I'm requesting a set of photo cards - over 100 up close pictures of different animals. I'm also requesting several sets of plastic animal models: ocean animals, forest animals, farm animals, and insects. In addition, to engage my young scientists, I'm asking for a set of plush animal puppets. (It's with a great deal of humility that I admit that kindergartners are much more attentive when a puppet is talking to them than a teacher. If this is what it takes, I'll do it.) And, finally, I'm requesting a set of actual animal specimens preserved in plastic cases. These animal specimen are designed for young children. They're durable, and yet still allow children to get up close with real animals and observe them from all angles.

For my students, most of whom are learning English as a second-language, and many of whom, due to their socio-economic background, have spent little time in the outdoors or at zoos, this kind of first-hand experience with real animal specimens or animal models is especially critical.

Please help me get the tools I need to give my eager young biologists the education they deserve!
