My Students
Our school incorporates the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. This program focuses on the development of the whole child by helping students become lifelong learners. My students learn to develop respect for themselves and others and learn to accept and appreciate the diversity found in the world around them.
In our first grade classroom we love learning, laughing, celebrating our differences, and growing as a classroom family.
My students love to make each other smile and laugh, and celebrate their unique qualities. We live each day with a growth mindset and understand that we all learn best in different ways.
My goal is to make sure that all of my students are represented in the books I share in my classroom. I want to teach them that books can be mirrors or windows: mirrors to see themselves represented in the story or in the characters or windows to help them see into the lives of others who are different from them.
My Project
These materials will provide new perspectives for my first grade students. I have worked to build a large library of picture books for my students, but my collection has a long way to go in order to ensure all my students are represented, as well as exposed to people, cultures, and perspectives that are different from their own.
We will incorporate these texts into our classroom library to act as mirrors and windows.
Books that are mirrors will allow my students to see themselves portrayed in the story or in the characters. Books that are windows will allow my students to see into the lives of others who are different from them.
