About My Students

Leenesha, Yaidra, Xiana, Rolando, Jose and others come to the library at lunch every Thursday all year to learn how to code, design, and use electronics in context. They are middle schoolers that are creative, thoughtful, and curious. Each week they continue to push their understanding of tech.

The students have used the websites Instructables to research projects that they are interested in working on for the year. Some projects include 3D Printed Lamps with LEDs that they will code to move to music, BB8 robots, self-designed robots, and Minecraft Micro-servers. They are using 3D design sites to create designs for their projects they are working on. Currently we have one 3D Printer and it is working hard. Students asked to write another Donors Choose project to get another printer to speed up the process of seeing their projects to fruition.

All projects are student-led, designed, and initiated. For example, Yaidra said she needed a lamp to read by at night. She found a project that would meet her needs, worked on the 3D design, and is putting the lamp together using electronics. Yes, she is learning valuable technology and coding skills but more importantly she is building confidence and resiliency by working on a project of her own design. Often times, she becomes frustrated because things have not turned out the way she wanted and instead of quitting she backtracks to problem solve what went wrong. She is not unique- all of the students are experiencing similar feelings and experiences. I am their cheerleader- urging them on, guiding them but not doing the work for them. I can't wait for the final projects! They are going to feel a sense of pride at completing a self-driven technology project on their own.

In Their Own Words

Yaidra: I want to learn how to use all of the technology tools possible. I am having fun 3D Printing. At first I just copied the designs and now I am trying my own. I want to complete this project and try a new one next year. Jose: I want to make a Minecraft Micro Server. I am waiting to print my case and I am so excited that when I play it will be on something I created. Leenesha: I want to make a robot like the BB8 in Star Wars. At first it seemed impossible now I am almost done.

We are doing everything by ourselves. She and some volunteers are there to help when we get stuck but we are doing all of the work on our own. We found the projects on our own, gathered the materials, and putting it all together. Usually, at school we do what we are told but not this time. This time we are our own teachers. Some of us are working together and helping each other out. We feel more confident to do more complicated work with each goal we meet. It is a lot of fun!

We live the tech capital of the world, yet we live on the back end of the city and really far away from all the tech companies. Actually from our school you can see the freeway taking the tech workers in their buses to their jobs either here in the city or Silicon Valley. It feels that we are getting passed by. This work is showing us how to take control of our own learning instead of waiting for someone to help us. Our school may not have a lot but we have the enthusiasm to do anything!
