My Students

I work at a public high school in San Francisco and teach Social Studies classes and English Language Learners who are usually recent immigrants to the U.S. My students are very motivated to improve their English skills and diligently persevere in their educational goals.

With all the challenges of distance learning, my students have responded with empathy, kindness, and patience.

They have expressed disappointment that they are not able to learn in-person alongside their classmates, but they are determined to make the most of this year.

My Project

In my social studies classes for English Language Learners (ELLs), I use Writing is Thinking - Strategic Inquiry (WITsi) practices to develop their language skills. This is a very responsive and student-centered approach that involves analyzing student work every two weeks and creating personalized curriculum tailored to student needs.

In these first few weeks of distance learning, I have learned that my students need more than what I can post and share online.

Online learning platforms have a lot to offer, but they do not serve my students with unreliable internet and my ELLs who are still struggling to type and learn English.

The tools in this project will equip me with what I need to deliver or mail printed, personalized curriculum to my students. When I return to the physical classroom, I will continue to use these tools to deliver bound curriculum (an upgrade from the loose worksheets I assigned before).

Students without wifi have the right to learn. Help me teach them.
