My students need stools and dry erase tables to use during small group instruction to better personalize their learning. The horseshoe shape of these tables will also allow teachers to better access, reach and teach each individual learner.
The first grade learners in our classroom are far from traditional. They are unique and individually gifted! They have a wide variety of interests, learning styles, strengths, and needs.
Personalized learning is the goal for each and every one of our learners.
However, certain aspects of our classroom community are "traditional," including the out-of-date classroom library, aging tables, and four-legged traditional chairs. We would like to provide a more unique and learner-friendly classroom environment to better support our students' learning interests, styles, and needs.
Our school is in a suburban neighborhood.
My Project
Since we co-teach all subjects throughout the day, we each instruct and lead small groups. We each need a table to meet with our small groups. The standard "kidney" shape table doesn't allow for easy access to each student, and it is often hard to reach across the table while reading with a student or demonstrating a math strategy. A horseshoe-shaped table allows a better design to easily access each individual student more directly.
With hopes of making our tables more accessible for students to work on and show their thinking while solving problems, we attempted to make our own dry erase tables from scratch this past school year.
The tables have worked okay this year but they need to be replaced. The tape has since worn off the edges and crumbs and other waste materials have gathered in the taped edges. The stools and horseshoe dry erase tables which I am requesting will allow for more direct instruction and will last longer.
We've noticed that our young learners like to have a choice and variety of seating options while working. So over the past few years, we have made strides to personalize and create better seating options for our students and have bought bean bags, cushions, stools, and camping chairs. The stools will offer movement for those students that like to "rock" or "move" while working.
