Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

It is so hard for first graders to learn about personal space. All first graders want to sit on the person in front of them or beside them. The problem is, not all first graders want to be sat on. I have tried a variety of things to help prevent this. At the beginning of the year I post down tape lines and they have to sit on the line but by mid year the tape is gone, either because we have walked across it too many times or because someone's busy fingers found something to do. How wonderful it would be if they all had their own square to sit on! There would be no questions as to where they should sit and how far they should lean over when they get excited about an answer. All my students want to follow the rules and be good students. A carpet would help establish clear boundaries and as a result we could concentrate on learning math and learning to read and write. The carpet I have picked out has a square for each letter and each letter is printed on a book cover- how perfect for a first grade classroom!
