My Students

This is my second year teaching, and I am constantly in awe of what my students are capable of! I teach at a school that reflects the diversity of Atlanta, with students bringing a variety of cultures and languages into our classroom.

One of my favorite parts of teaching is getting to learn from and with my students.

Every Friday for our morning meeting we do Feedback Friday, where the students share what they think is going well in our classroom and what they think we need to work on as a team. It is one of my favorite times of the week because students get to collectively reflect on their successes, while also being honest about changes that need to be made. When there are issues, I reflect on how I can best support my class in overcoming them. Some of the issues that students brought up this year had to do with our classroom organization, which was one of the inspirations for this project.

I take my students' feedback very seriously and want to provide them with the best learning experience possible!

My Project

Schools across the world have been dramatically affected by COVID-19, and I have no idea what this coming school year has in store. Assuming we are back in the classroom come August, I want to make sure I'm able to provide my students with a safe and healthy environment.

I have been brainstorming how to minimize the spread of germs, but this is hard in a classroom where there are so many shared spaces and materials.

In the past, students have placed all of their lunch boxes in one bin, their jackets in another bin, their headphones in a drawer, and their water bottles next to each other by the sink. I think the first step to minimizing the spread of germs is to give each student a cubby where they can keep all of their belongings.

Additionally, I want to make sure each student has their own pair of headphones. Many students are not able to bring headphones from home, so in the past they have had to share the few extra I have available in my classroom. With the current health concerns, I no longer feel comfortable having students share headphones. Finally, I am asking for some additional organizational materials, like paper trays and file folders, to help streamline how students get their assignments and turn them in.

In this time of uncertainty, I want to feel certain that I am taking every precaution that I can to keep my students safe and healthy. These materials would be very helpful in helping me achieve that goal.
