Personal Rekenreks!

Help me give my students individual rekenreks for them to be able to participate with their own manipulatives. The ability to touch and manipulate the rekenrek themselves will significantly help the students increase their number sense abilities!

My Students

I teach at a Title I school to kids that come with all different types of backgrounds. I have students in my class who live at homeless shelters, live in hotels, and are refugees. In my classroom alone I have 4 different languages that are spoken. Being able to immerse them in an education that will help them to experience a lot of things that they would never experience outside of school is amazing. I am not just a teacher to my students. I am a nurse, a therapist, a mom, a constant adult in their lives. I love all of my students with my whole heart and they all know it!

My Project

The Post-it notes help to make anchor charts to display around the classroom so that all my students can reference back to previous lessons and important things to remember. We use at least one anchor chart every day in the classroom. My students will even go over and look through previous anchor charts to find something they need if they are not all posted on the wall.

As a first grade teacher building a strong number sense with my students is very important!

Rekenreks help for the students to not only be able to count but also to have one-to-one correspondence and visually see the number. Having a personal Rekenrek for each student as well as a teacher model will greatly benefit their learning! We have just drawn counters or used counters in the past but to be able to hold and manipulate a rekenrek and to be able to see 20 at one time will significantly increase their number sense and counting abilities.
