Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The almost 900 students at our school live in a low-income neighborhood with limited access to basic school supplies. We are a Title I school with almost all of the students qualifying for free breakfast and free lunch each day.

Although my students have limited access to resources, they are enthusiastic to come to school each day to learn many new standards.

I look forward to giving my students many of the much-needed supplies this year by asking the generous donors of Donors Choose to provide these supplies.

My Project

Nine percent of our 869 students are classified as homeless. That is higher than most schools.

While I struggle to teach the 85% of students that do not speak English as a first language or the 13% that are classified as Special Education, I am met with many students here at school and in our grade level that do not have their basic needs being met on a daily basis.

Since I teach the optional maturation class here at school, I would like to offer the students personal hygiene materials such as: Always teen pads, Kotex pads, and a small paper bag to carry these samples home in after the maturation class. While we talk about their bodies, we also talk about how to care for their personal hygiene needs. With these supplies and resources for the students, I can explain how they can be used and why they are used. At the end of the class, I will pass out many samples to each of the 5th grade girls.
