Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hello. I teach first grade in Gilroy, California. The majority of my students are English Language Learners and on free or reduced lunch plans. Seventeen of my twenty kids are below in reading already. Seven of them are at kindergarten reading levels. There are many roadblocks in the way of them learning to read as quickly as other, but mostly, I have learned, lack of reading at home. Some students had no books before I gave them some to take home. There is little to no parent support at home for many of them. What they need is a fun book that will motivate them without their parent's urging that is easy enough for them to read to kindle their interest in books. Dr. Seuss' Hop on Pop is a perfect fit. It's cheap enough to get a class set, one for each of them to keep as their own, it's simple enough to read, and certainly more than fun enough to keep their interest, as they love Dr. Seuss books. This will help the battle at home as they spend their nights around nothing but TV, computers, and video games. In class, we'll read them together before they take them home, using the books for phonemic awareness lessons, reading comprehension, sight words, rhyming patterns (for which this book is perfect), and even act out some pages. It is the best bang for the buck I can think of. Any help you can give to this aim would be very much appreciated. These students need help and I don't have the financial means to give what they need. Thank you for your time and any help you might give.
