This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are energetic kids with a love of learning. At least 90% of them come from low-income households, with parents struggling to pay rent and get food on the table. And yet, these children still want to create, read, write, and learn!
My students are worried about food and shelter, but they are sheltering in place with basic classroom necessities that provide them with some normalcy, allowing them to participate in class online.
I am trying to meet their needs emotionally, as well as academically, during this pandemic. I want them to be safe and stay healthy as they work hard to learn to read, learn to use technology, and at the same time, learn Language Art, Math, and Science.
My Project
In order to reopen school in the Fall, our State Superintendent, Tony Thurmond, is recommending all students have a place for their personal belongings that is separate from others at all times. We must "Keep each child’s belongings separated and in an individually labeled storage container, cubby, or area. (And we must) Send belongings home each day to be cleaned." This is quoted from "Stronger Together: A Guidebook for the Safe Reopening of California Schools."
I wish to provide my students with individual storage cubbies to promote health safety, organizational skills and better family communication.
In order to protect my students from germs and viruses, they need their own cubby space for their backpacks, papers and personal items. By having their own space, we have a better chance of preventing cross contamination and the spread of illnesses.
In addition, students will have more organization and papers will make it home to the correct household, providing better communication with parents on schoolwork and current events.
