This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from homes where they are first generation American citizens and from homes where their families sacrifice to provide them with all that they need to become successful in the United States. One of the keys to that success is the availability of current fiction and nonfiction texts.

As my students pursue their dreams and strive to achieve academically, the ability for my students to access and read current fiction and nonfiction books is essential.

Exposure to current texts across different genres enables students to make connections with the text and own them. In owning them, the students will be able to access their themes and any relevant details to discussions in class. But the most important impact is that the students will realize the wealth of literature that is currently out there for them to read and they will enjoy reading.

My Project

As the class begins its next read aloud text, I believe it would be essential for the students to have their own personal copies of the text for review and close reading. Personal copies of the text will also enable the students to mark up the text as Common Core Standards promote; reviewing the text for author's craft and important details.

Retaining a personal copy of the read aloud text will enable students to reread the pages read aloud in class and to review the author's craft in constructing the elements of the novel.

As the students become engaged with the text, the text becomes theirs, and retaining a copy of the text will empower the students to elicit specific details from the novel "Tunes for Bears to Dance to." It also provides another book to add to their personal libraries.
