I am looking to start a personal care needs closet at the elementary school that I work at.
I work at a school where a lot of our students are lower income families with multiple children. I see kids everyday who need a hair brush, toothbrush, lotion, etc. Things that most people take for granted these kids need. I know when they have their hair done or can brush their teeth, they have a better start to the school day. It's the little things that can have a big impact on a child's mental health. When they have a way to take care of personal needs it can give them a big boost in their mental health and readiness for the school day
I personally have kids come to me every school day and ask me for something that they need to make them feel more ready for the day. It may be a hair brush and someone to help them brush their hair. Lotion because their skin is dry. Chapstick because we are in MN, and the weather is hard on lips. I also have kids who have more personal needs like they don't have shampoo at home or they ran out of soap. They notice that they have started to smell from body odor and need a deodorant to use, or girls get their first period and are embarrassed to say something in the classroom.
Right now I try on my own to have things that the kids may ask for available for them. But honestly it takes a village to raise kids these days, and I am just one person.
