My Students
Music class is an oasis in our students' week of intense learning. In our music lab we service children from second through fifth grade. They come all excited every morning to learn and explore with sound and instruments as we discover music together.
We are a Title I school that services children in a low income area that lacks the resources to learn with today's technology.
Our children get excited about electronics and gadgets they see on TV and desire to be able to interact with them as they learn. Right now our children don't possess the technology in our music lab to replicate what a tablet can offer and we hope to bring to them the opportunity to be creative in the arts through technology.
My Project
In our music lab we teach music through history, theory, and performance using a modern rock band approach. They play the instruments following the songs' chord progressions and with the help of these materials we can reflect the applications on the board and have the group follow along as they play. A tablet like the iPad is a tool with limitless utilities and applications. Using the iPad to mirror apps like riffStation to play along, or the ability to compose and record original tracks with GarageBand are examples of the type of hands on activities our kids want to experience and dream about.
Many of our children struggle daily with schoolwork because of their socioeconomic status and language barrier.
Music class is the subject where they could thrive and use their abilities with success. The addition of an iPad to our program will bring about a new level of discovery as we tap into the world of applications.
