My students need non-fiction books on their reading level to meet the needs of the Common Core State Standards and camcorders to report and record what they have learned. My students also need tape and Post-It notes.
When you have to teach someone, YOU become the expert. Let's give our students the opportunity to become experts on non-fiction topics and they can share their knowledge with other students and staff. We need to give them the tools to become experts!
We are buddying up to develop this project.
We are two teachers in a small, rural school district. We teach kindergarten and first grade. Our classes are made up of a total of 38 students of a variety of needs and abilities. Our students are beginning to walk down the Common Core path of learning. This is a rigorous curriculum and any help gathering materials would help bring learning to the next level for ALL students.
Because we are a small school district, we do not receive much funding for the CCSS. This makes it difficult to ensure all students are receiving the instruction at their level.
Our students all have different learning modalities. Due to tight budgets, we do not always have the resources to meet everyone's learning styles.
My Project
The CCSS have a huge focus on non-fiction text. We are hoping that this project will allow our two classes to work together to develop their non-fiction fact reporting skills. Our students will be able to read and buddy read the leveled non-fiction books that will be funded by this project.
As they are reading, they can take note and highlight important facts, vocabulary or ideas. While they are reading, they can also jot down any questions they have about their topic.
As students finish reading their books they are going to "report" their discoveries. Using the flip video cameras, the students will produce news reports about their topic. During this news report, they will have to show their expertise and teach the other students about their topic. Students will have to practice reading fluently, use their comprehension strategies and communicate their thoughts and information clearly. We will culminate this unit with a viewing party.
This project will allow ALL students with all abilities and learning styles to be successful.
This also gives the students the materials they need to meet the needs of the CCSS. We want our students to be prepared for the future, and this project will also allow them to be confident in public speaking and be proud to share their area of expertise. This is sure to be a project that will be unforgettable.
