Performing Centerstage: Extraordinary Women in History

My class room needs 15 copies of "Extraordinary Women from U.S. History: Readers Theater" and a single copy of "Making Sense of History: Using High-Quality Literature and Hands-On Experiences to Build Content Knowledge".

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. O.'s classroom raised $570

This project is fully funded

All of my students enjoy rights and liberties fought for and won in hard struggles by different groups throughout history. The battles of each group often parallel the struggles of other groups. My class studies units on the struggles of Native Americans and African Americans thought history. This year, I'd like for my students to also better understand the contributions of women in art, politics, medicine, and science. I believe that by putting my students in these women's shoes via plays, they will gain a deeper understanding and perspective about another group in American History. The copies of Extraordinary Women will take the class beyond our textbooks and allow for discussion of women's historical roles as the students work in pairs or small groups. In addition, these books will allow the students to compare the progress of women to the struggles of other groups and draw conclusions about their similar situations and the differences that existed for each group. By working in small groups as they read and perform, all my students, male and female, can feel the inspiration of these tremendous women. The Reader's Theater opens up affective learning in the students as understanding of motivation and emotion arises through their performances. In addition, performing factual pieces allows the visual and kinesthetic learners in a classroom to better retain the curriculum. Additionally, performing history through literature allows students to become better public speakers, grow in self-confidence, and engage in interactive learning. The donation of these books to my classroom will deepen my students comprehension about the roles the different genders have played throughout history and help them appreciate the hard-won freedoms they now enjoy. Thank you for considering my proposal.
