Our art students come from a variety of socioeconomic, cultural, and artistic backgrounds. Some of our students come to us and have never created art. I work hard to incorporate art creation, aesthetics, art history, and art criticism into my students' lessons and make it my personal goal for these kids to enjoy walking into the art room to create! In our art room, we make connections to the core areas (math, reading, social studies, science, and writing) so students see that art connects to many parts of our lives.
Our art students are always creating, doodling, drawing, sculpting, folding, carving, critiquing, analyzing, comparing, and learning!
We are a busy classroom!
My Project
Our middle school may be in rural northern Wisconsin, but we are diverse in many ways! I am our yearbook adviser and attend many different athletic events to take photos. A year ago, I noticed one of our young Muslim athletes struggling with her Hijab - trying to keep it in place with pins and tucking it in properly - all while trying to play basketball at the same time.
After speaking with our Muslim athletes and our coaches, we realized there is a need for performance Hijabs to be added to our team uniform options for our young women.
We were fortunate enough to have a similar project funded a year ago - we have provided our young women with the athletic hijabs. We have several more girls in need of a performance hijab this year. Our young Muslim athletes participate in many sports, including track and field, basketball, volleyball, soccer, and swimming. Help us get them ready for competition by completing their uniform!
