I am the sole dance teacher at a neighborhood (non-selective) inner-city high school representing over 150 dance students from across the globe speaking over sixty different languages. My diverse group of dancers is enrolled in dance as part of their Arts requirement. We celebrate their diverse demographics through the study of traditional and cultural dance styles.
Despite the economic challenges they face on a daily basis, my classroom is a safe space for students to discover their artistic voice through creative expression.
The majority of my students join my class with little to no previous dance training or exposure to dance. We work collaboratively to study and create dance in a judgment-free zone. With your help, my students will have the opportunity to enhance their art education and love of dance.
My Project
All 5 of my classes will be performing in the end of the semester Arts Showcase. For the dancers their participation in this performance is mandatory as it will count as their final exam grade. Each class collaborated on the brainstorming (Dance Theme, Style, Music, and Costumes), creation (Choreography), and final product of their dance. By combining what the students have learned in class with what they already know, they have created a one of a kind experience for our audience to see. The 5 themes that were selected are: 90's Hip Hop, Latin/Hip-Hop Fusion, Dance Styles Celebration (Swing, Modern, Hip-Hop), Michael Jackson Tribute, and 60's/70's/80's.
The students are SO excited to perform and showcase what they have learned thus far and I would love to be able to reward their hard work with new costumes!
For many of my students, they have never been on stage or performed in front of an audience. They have been rehearsing daily inside and outside of school in anticipation of this performance. The only part missing now is their costumes. My students are using clothes from their own closets for the majority of their costume; however, the remaining uniform items are listed in this project! For my dance 1 students, they have requested white t-shirts. My dance 2 students have requested matching black shirts. My dance 3 honors students have requested unitards and skirts for the ladies and white t-shirts for the gentlemen. They will be changing between songs and the unitards will allow them to quick change backstage.
