Play school is what many children call prekindergarten and it is a perfect description of what prekindergarten should and can be. Play is the way children learn, and unfortunately that is not what happens in many schools anymore.
My classroom serves pre-kindergarten aged children that have been identified as developmentally delayed.
That means that they need extra support to master what children their age already have mastered. My particular class is a half day program as the students are not ready for a full day, but this means I serve twice as many students since I have a morning and an afternoon class. My school is also labeled as a Title I facility with the entire school receiving free lunch through a special grant. Even with all of these disadvantages stacked against my students, they still love school and I have some that cry almost daily when they have to leave.
Many of these students do not have the opportunity to play with other children or they do not have the opportunity to play with appropriate toys that foster language and creativity. This has a significantly negative impact on their ability to learn in the way they learn best, through play. This is especially troubling for my students who already show signs of developmental delays. Unfortunately, my class has little in the way of appropriate toys for my students. They have no kitchen table to act out housekeeping play. This toy alone can foster multiple opportunities for language development through verbal interaction. Another issue is that they have a doll house but no furniture to put in it. This is another opportunity for children to increase vocabulary and an awareness of social concepts. Another area of development we are working on is focus and boundaries. With the community rug we can work on both as well as provide additional vocabulary development with the pictures displayed.
My students struggle with many things in and out of school and sometimes just being at school is hard.
Play, however, is one way I can bridge the gap and give them the support they need to be successful. You can help me reach these students. YOU can be that bridge that leads them to success in and out of school. You can be the change they need to be all they can be. Please help me bring a perfectly playful pre-kindergarten to my students.
