I teach 21 2nd grade students in a low-income, rural setting. Almost one fourth of my class speaks Spanish at home. Half of my students live in poverty and receive free lunch. The make-up of my classroom this year is about half gifted students and half struggling readers.

With the class that I have this year, reading skills are super important. I have such a dichotomy that I am faced with remediation and enrichment at the same time. I need some additional resources to make the most of my time with these youngsters.

Educational research supports the idea that children get better at reading by reading. I want to give my students ample opportunity to read books of their choice and have fun while doing it. I want to teach my class that reading provides a great deal of enjoyment and knowledge, not just a class to get through or a subject to endure in school. One way that I would like to make this happen for my kids is through partner reading. With the 2 very different groups of readers that I have in my class this year, I can partner kids up in a variety of ways for reading: low with high – peer tutoring, similar ability partners for equal improvement, and free choice partners. I have found a set of materials that will make this work very well in my room. I found a partner reading book set that comes with 2 copies of each book, and I also found echo microphones that the kids can use to really hear themselves and each other while they are reading. These materials will make a session or two of partner reading quite easy to accomplish each week. We will have several different 2-copy book sets already put together without having to hunt for like titles in our classroom or school library.

Without these materials, it will be much more difficult and time consuming to get good partner reading accomplished each week. Your help with this project will make it possible for my class and other 2nd grade classes in my school to have one more piece of proof that reading is fun and enjoyable, not just work that your teacher assigns. We would really appreciate having these materials in our classroom.
