My Project

Learning about market structure might not be at the top of a student’s list for engaging topics, but there is one simple way to make it come alive in the classroom.

Give the students a chance to interact with each other, put their cell phones down, and play the board game Monopoly.

Market structure begins by summarizing the relationship between buyers and sellers and who sets the price. Perfect competition exists when many sellers offer the same product for sale. This gives the buyers options when choosing to make a purchase. When the number of sellers decreases, then only a few options exist. This is an oligopoly and sellers gain influence over price especially when they follow each other or make agreements. Finally, a monopoly exists when only one seller offers the product and buyers must make their purchase through that business. Why not emphasize this point with a fun game of Monopoly? Maybe the students will put down their cell phones for a moment.
