This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are middle school students in grades 6-8 who are learning to discover a passion for reading. 97% of my students receive SNAP benefits and come from a low socioeconomic environment. My students have been introduced to many fantastic authors that they can relate to and I want to enhance their little light and help it shine brighter.
My students are very vocal about issues they face in their community.
I believe reading will be an opportunity for my children to escape, if only for a while.
My Project
Winter hats and gloves may seem non-essential. However winter hats and gloves are necessary for our students. Having winter hats and gloves helps students make a positive choice to fight Chicago's winter and come to school.
Guaranteed warmth guarantees attendance.
Learning takes place when you're in attendance. Having winter essentials will eliminate the internal conflict students face when deciding if they want to fight the weather and come to school. Statistically, our attendance drops during the winter months. Our goal is 96% perfect attendance for the school year and we want to keep up the great work through the cold winter months.
Having warmth necessities helps students fight the battle as they travel to and from school on a daily basis, trying to keep warm and safe.
