Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a Title I middle school in Austin, TX. All of my students are considered economically disadvantaged and face a range of other challenges every single day. The majority of the students I work with have a variety of learning disabilities or have experienced trauma in their lives. My students are kind, hard-working, and amazing. They make me proud everyday.
I set high expectations for my students, and I am constantly amazed by their efforts despite the many challenges they face.
My students continue to help me grow into a better educator and inspire me everyday.
My Project
Last year, my students and I began reading the Percy Jackson series. They were skeptical at first, but by the end of the week they were begging me to let them read for the entire class period! These students told me at the beginning of the year that they haven’t read a whole novel since 4th grade, and that they hate reading. As a class, we continued to read the next 2 books in the series.
My students were disappointed when we found out "the Battle of the Labyrinth" does not come out until October.
I want to have a classroom set of these graphic novels so my students can continue to grow their love of reading.
While reading these books, I saw my students grow so much. They would volunteer to read out loud, answer comprehension questions, and make quality predictions.
