Percy Jackson Helps Freshmen Enjoy Homer's Odyssey

My students need books to get ready to be successful in English I.

My Students

I work at a very diverse high school. We are a school of high poverty, and many of our students read well below grade level. Our school is dedicated to improving literacy skills.

I want my students to discover the JOY of reading for pleasure, and not view reading as a chore required to answer questions and pass a test.

Using high-interest reading material is a great way to encourage students to choose to read rather than refuse to read.

Many of my students are reluctant readers, are challenged by a reading disability, or do not speak English as their native language. Finding material that is fun to read that will also be beneficial to success in future English classes is key.

My Project

Not every high school student is ready for the rigors of English I (Ninth Grade English). My school offers (and I teach) a literacy-boosting course called High School English, which helps struggling readers be better prepared for success in English I. The Percy Jackson series mimics the plot of Homer's Odyssey and is a great way to hook those struggling readers.

A class set of The Lightning Thief, (the first book in the Percy Jackson Series) can help my students be ready to read, understand, and enjoy Homer's Odyssey when they move on to English I.

A copy of the remaining books in the series will encourage students to borrow a sequel to read independently!

High School English not only prepares students for English I, it also sets the tone for how many of our students will feel about working harder to succeed in English classes throughout their high school career. I truly believe that the course serves as dropout prevention for many students.
