This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a school on the far northeast side of Chicago where 100% of the students receive free lunch. Due to the lack of funding, I am not able to buy any new books for my 6th grade Language Arts classroom. We are trying to improve test scores and prepare for the new Common Core assessments, but we do not have the resources we need. Our students are wonderful and work extremely hard. They often comment on our lack of quality reading materials, and it is easy to see their disappointment. I start off every school year reading “Percy Jackson and The Olympians: The Lightening Thief”, but I only have a couple other “Percy Jackson” books.

Our classroom library needs more books in the Percy Jackson series and books by Rick Riordan!

The students love The Lightening Thief and want to continue reading the next books in the series. We need more choice of high interest books in our classroom library. Students are expected to read at school and at home, but there is never enough high interest books in our library! I also have a high population of English Language Learners in my classroom who are growing as readers!

My Project

All my students love reading Percy Jackson. It is a high level, high interest series, but we don't have all the books in the series. The students have been begging for other others, so I knew it was time to get more! There are also wonderful graphic novel versions of most of the books, which are great for my English language learners and diverse learners. Rick Riordan (the author of the Percy Jackson series) has written other book series. I want my students who are interested in Percy to also have other options of great books to read. I want to foster a love of reading in my classroom, so if my students want more books to read they should get them!!
