Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are enthusiastic, energetic, and always ready to learn new things. They constantly amaze me with their zealous and infectious passion for life and music. This is the first year that my school has had a music program, and since they have never had band before, my students are curious and love coming to band. My students have thanked me saying if I introduce them to an instrument, they would have never realized their potential in creating music.
Our school is a tight knit community; many of these students have attended school together since kindergarten.
Administration sees the impact our new music program has made on our students and is incredibly supportive of the arts, but it is difficult to fund a band program for 240 students.
As a teacher who grew up in the same low-income neighborhood, I can empathize with the challenges they face in and out of the classroom. The needs of Bronx students are frequently overlooked, and they are not given the same opportunities or funding as those in the more affluent areas. In my classroom, every student receives the sequential, well-rounded music education that is their fundamental right.
My Project
These percussion instruments will make a difference in my students' learning because it will give them a quality percussion experience. There are pieces that we play that require crash cymbals but unfortunately we do not have any. We also have a snare drum with no snare stand.
My students deserve to have a positive and enriching expierence by getting to perform on traditional band/orchestra percussion instruments.
As a new band program, I want my students to have the best experience possible with quality intruments that make them feel professional. Students at any age should have access to difference kinds of percussion instruments.
