This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are brand new to music. This has been our first full year with a music program. We are located in the city of Flint and funds are limited so in music, it is tough to acquire the instruments and supplies we need.
My percussion section right now playing practice pads, buckets and a drum kit snare which is too short for concert band.
There are excited to grow as musicians and are getting better everyday.
Next year, our band program will be even stronger and will be prepared for our first set of concerts in the 2019-2020 school year. Pep band/marching band will be a great addition to our school.
My Project
Students will be able to lead pep band at both basketball, football, and pep assemblies. Currently, for concert band, we use an old broken apart drum set to make the percussive noises we need.
These marching drums will also be used in concert band until I can fund concert band percussion as well.
The percussion section already has a drive that I know will carry through to a successful pep/marching band in the future.
Currently , we have a 9-12 concert band with an array of general music classes for k-12. Next year will be band and choir available for 6th-12th grade on top of general music or k-5. Rehearsals this summer will be our first opportunity to tackle pep band at International Academy of Flint.
