This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I really like giving my upper grade students projects that are more than surface level art projects. I like giving them projects that provoke thought and discussion. I recently started creating Zentangles or mandalas with a positive quote in the middle with my older students. They really enjoy creating the intricate patterns. I have them use different lines and shapes to create patterns. They draw everything in pencil. Then they outline in pen. The final step is to color using the medium they like best whether that be colored pencils, markers, watercolors, or pastels.

When they are creating the intricate designs they are able to zone out and relax their weary minds by concentrating their efforts to create something beautiful.

When their hands are busy their minds become cleared. I really enjoy doing these zentangles myself. It helps me destress. This is a good way to empower and encourage students to be more insightful, sensitive, and caring because they are able to look for and incorporate positive messages in their design.
