This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are smart, creative, and resilient. Over 90% of our students live a mile or less from our school, and almost a third of our incoming 6th-grade class has family member that is currently or has attended our school. Despite being concentrated in one of the most stressful neighborhoods in our city (in terms of violence and poverty), our students are successful.

Each year our school grows, increasing our graduation rate and college acceptance rate, with 80% of graduates attending college last year.

We help students get excited and get into college! We are a small school and can create very rich and deep relationships with students while they are here since most teachers loop two years with each class. Students take college classes and attend seminars to prepare for after high school. If students start to fall behind we have mandatory academic support. We don't let anyone fall through the cracks. We believe all students can succeed and with this attitude they make it happen!

My Project

Having spare pens and pencils at hand will help ease the burden of purchasing school supplies that falls on my students' families. It is especially important to ensure students have access to supplies this year since the global pandemic, and the losses associated with it, have created lasting financial effects.

Since students have returned to school, they are once again expected to purchase and bring many different supplies with them.

Our school fundraises to provide the larger items like binders, backpacks, and shoes, but having a reliable source of pens and pencils is also extremely important to support students in their academic success.
