Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 8th grade math in an inner city community. My kids face many obstacles everyday, including poverty and gang violence. They are reminded of this daily as they come to school, as the school is located adjacent to a jail and around the corner from the criminal court. Given all that the kids have to overcome on a daily basis, it is nice to see them so excited about learning a subject that will truly make them competitive in today’s technology age.
We were lucky enough to get funding for an LCD projector. Now we need a cart to put it on. The goal of the class is to prepare the students to pass their integrated algebra exam at the end of this year. This exam is normally administered to high school students. My eighth grade students, however, have decided to challenge themselves and work hard so that they may complete this exam at the end of this year. This would put the students on track to receive an advanced Regent’s diploma, the highest level diploma from NYC public schools. Ultimately, we are preparing them to enter highly competitive colleges. In order to do this we need basic materials, including pencils, erasers, and a pencil sharpener. We also need math Regents books to help prepare for the upcoming algebra regents exam.
The students are highly motivated by the fact that people outside of the school are interested in their success and demonstrate this by supplying the materials they need to accomplish their goals. We appreciate any donations of these needed materials and appreciate you taking the time to read about our story!
