My Students

My students are amazing sponges. The have such a great capacity for learning. I teach Kindergarten at an English-Chinese dual language school on the boundary of Chinatown in New York City. Our school is located in an area adjacent to public housing developments and old tenement buildings that have housed generations of new immigrants. The vast majority of my students begin the school year speaking only Chinese or only English. Over the course of the school year, they will become fluent in both languages.

We incorporate songs and movement into our daily routine so that my students can learn language organically.

Non-native Chinese and non-native English speaking parents are always amazed by how quickly their children pick up the new languages. Just one month into the new school year and their children are able to pronounce English and Chinese words. The walls of our school are filled with writing samples in both English and Chinese.

My Project

We are approaching the middle of the school year and the supplies that students started with in September are running low. I would like to replenish our supply of pre-sharpened Ticonderoga #2 pencils which my students use in class every day. I sharpen our class pencils at the end of each day and when they get too short, it becomes difficult for my kindergarten students to grip. Some are still learning the proper way to hold a pencil.

A fresh supply of longer pencils will help my students continue to learn how to form letters and numbers as they develop their writing and mathematical skills.

We also use glue sticks for our cutting and pasting activities. The plastic folders will help us keep our work organized, and the Ziploc baggies are used for my students to take home book baggies each week with leveled readers.
