My Project

My second grade students are learning to be amazing writers! First we are practicing our letter formation with Zaner Bloser handwriting curriculum practice. This is a key part of learning to become quality writers. They need to practice letter formation so that their brains automatically know how to form the letters. If they do not learn automatic letter formation their brain spends too much time thinking about how to form the letters instead of getting their amazing ideas on the paper.

We spend a lot of time working through the writing process with high quality pencils in second grade.

We need to do research on our topic so that we can support our ideas with facts. We use graphic organizers to make sure we have key words for our brain to write sentences that fit our topic. We write a rough draft and edit ourselves. Then we share our writing with a peer and they use the high quality pencil to make edits or suggestions to improve our writing.

Once we have finished with personal and peer editing the teacher will look over our work and make more suggestions to strengthen the writing.

Finally we will rewrite our informational, opinion or narrative essay using our high quality pencil. We will make sure that we take our time and use our best letter formation and neat writing while using proper punctuation and grammar.

High quality pencils are also important to have for our daily math, science, social studies, health and social emotional learning activities. Without high quality pencils we waste time constantly sharpening them because they break easily.
