Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Believe it or not, pencils are a huge headache and time-waster. It's my 5th year teaching, and I still haven't mastered the great pencil dilemma. I supply them to students constantly, but they're always breaking and getting lost. Pencil-sharpening takes up valuable instructional minutes.
My school is in a poor urban neighborhood in California.
All students at my school qualify for free lunch due to their low economic status. I have 23 students in my third grade class. 22 are of Latino descent and 1 is of African-American descent. 18 of the 23 are English Language Learners (English is their second language). My students love working in groups. In general, they love math, science, and art. Reading and grammar are areas of concern for the majority of the class. They like to write stories and their stories are very creative. My third-graders are very energetic and eager to learn. That being said, sometimes they have too much energy and have trouble staying on task. Unfortunately, seemingly small problems (i.e. broken pencils, missing erasers, messy desks) can often hinder student productivity.
My Project
I'm very excited to potentially receive erasable pens in my classroom. For one thing, my students will be very excited to 'graduate' from pencils and move on to pens. They will definitely be eager to try them out. I really can't overstate the difference these pens will make in terms of time on task. The pencils that our school supplies us with are of mediocre quality and generally take a long time to sharpen. My goal is to eliminate all pencil-sharpening during the school day.
Please support my students.
Erasable pens will really make a difference in my classroom. Without a quality writing utensil, my students cannot be productive. Every time they have to get out of their seat for a pencil, they're missing out on learning. No more students interrupting lessons asking for pencils, no more loud sharpening, no more wasted time!!!
