Pencil Sharpeners to Keep Us Sharp!

My Students

My classroom has four ESL (English as a second language) teachers, five including myself. Our community is mainly ESL, and we service over 250 students. We are a Title I school that services low income and at-risk students. We are also an overflow school that continues to receive students almost weekly, most of them ESL students, which makes our numbers grow. We are a predominantly Arabic community, but we also work with students who speak Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Romanian, and Urdu. ESL teachers are expected to deliver excellent instruction in language, writing, reading, math, science, and social studies—all subjects our classroom teachers provide to students in grades K-4. We give these students the additional support they need to make them successful learners in both content and language areas.

Our students from grades K-4 receive one two-hour pullout support in our ESL office, ESL classroom, and other areas of the building wherever we can find space.

My Project

With our non-stop pull-out groups this school year, students write all day long. Therefore, with all of the writing comes all of the sharpening! We have one pencil sharpener that we share among four to five rooms that we use with students. It's difficult for students because, if they are not in our main classroom, they can't sharpen their pencil if it breaks. It also means that we have to make sure we have extras on hand, and with the back-to-back groups it can be difficult to quickly sharpen pencils before leaving to pick up the next group! Though we work with students in many rooms, replacing our current machine with a new one is desperately needed. We are also asking for a second sharpener so that we at least have a second machine to use! It's not practical to have one in every room, but we really need one in the rooms that get used the most.

In addition, our students need sticky notes to record their thoughts.

We complete activities with students where they need to use sticky notes, and we are running low! Having a fresh supply would also be very helpful. We hope you will be able to help us!
